“When I had my first child, I had no friends in Tucson
who had kids. Being a mom can be a lonely thing. I knew I needed sympathetic
people to share my joys and questions with. The problem was that I had no idea
how to find them.
In 2001, I was in the waiting room at my OB's office about to
be sent to the hospital to have my second child, a woman sitting next to me
told me about Tucson Moms. When my 2nd child was 3 months old I joined my first
playgroup. In the beginning it was rather terrifying. Getting the courage to
walk in the door of a house full of women I didn't know was tough. Every week
it got better and I found that it felt so good to converse with another mom
with the same issues that I had. Just hearing the "me too" and "oh,
I know how that is" helped so much. After about a year of attending playgroup
regularly, my kids and I ended up with a handful of really good friends. Having
friends with kids similar ages to my own has made my life so much better. I
would not be the mother I am today without their example and encouragement.
I ended up being a playgroup leader, a Tucson Moms website volunteer,
and finally I spent almost two years as one of the Directors of Tucson Moms.
Tucson Moms has given me more gifts that I would have ever imagined.
Tucson Moms can be a great way to have something fun to do once
a week or it can be a great way to find good friends for both you and your children.
I am thankful that I had the courage to try it out and keep on going until I
found my niche.”
